Many of our clients express that they should have constructed a carport structure years earlier. Some have already experienced damage to vehicles, RVs, or equipment, which could have been prevented with a carport. With nearly four decades in the construction industry and hundreds, if not thousands, of carport and patio cover installations under our belt, Carports & Patio Covers of Oklahoma by A Better Construction is a trusted name in carport construction. Our skilled team has the experience and expertise to take on any project, big or small, from residential homes to commercial buildings, always delivering quality and excellence. We go beyond offering just one type, design, style, or size—crafting custom carports from a variety of building materials to create unique structures for every client. Serving the OKC area and surrounding region for over thirty years, we’ve heard many clients say they wish they’d built a carport sooner, as it could have prevented costly damage to vehicles, RVs, or equipment. Unlike most other contractors, we build virtually any type of carport, and each one is individually designed and built to be truly one-of-a-kind.

The Spring / Summer / Fall are storms seasons on the Southern Plains which has some really unique weather conditions as they say around here you have to stay weather aware. Besides our sizzling hot summer season that can bake the clear coat finish right off of your vehicle. We can get really strong and severe or an outright wicked and wild thunderstorm that can produce heavy rains, large hail, abnormally high and very damaging winds drafts and even tornados. As of matter fact Oklahoma has more tornados per square mile than any other State. We are also what is called hail core ally as well. When the winds come swiping down the southern plains, Oklahoma's weather is not like any other place on earth! It gets hot and humid and with the winds It like the big bad wolf is trying to blow your house down.
Carports are no longer just a luxury. they’re essential for keeping your vehicles looking their very best, and they must be built to handle the strong Oklahoma winds. If your vehicles have to stay outside for any reason, a carport is a must.
In 2026, we’ve already seen a record number of tornadoes for the mouth of March. On March 10th, a hailstorm swept through the OKC metro area, moving from the far Southwest parts of the City, then across downtown, and into the far east side of the city, causing damage from the hail along its path.
When building any larger sized or taller the canopy structure, the more uplift from wind drafts it will experience. This can cause the structure to attempt to lift up into the air or be torn apart. The design and engineering of the larger canopy frame must account for the unique weather conditions it might encounter, or the structure could be lost. While many parts of the country may only require a design for 35-mph wind loads, our products must be capable of withstanding frequent wind loads of 75 to over 100 mph.
That’s why we often point out that what works in anouther region of the country might not be a good fit here in Oklahoma, given our extreme wind loads that local structures must be designed to handle it. We’ve seen cheap portable or temporary carports either get blown away or fall apart in our high winds.
Ensure your safety with a durable, permanent canopy structure built to the local building codes which are a minimum building standard. Same goes for the larger patio covers structures. The wider and or the longer the open spins might be the larger and stronger the poles and the cross beams must be to handle the higher loads not one size fits all applications. We would rather to ask our customers to spend more build a structure right then to apologize later for cutting corners.
The frame structure is responsible for all the heavy lifting. As old framers by trade, we often say everything starts with the frame! The more robustness of the frame, especially the poles and beams, dictates its stability under any stress. The frame of the structure is very vital for supporting the entire build and securing it against strong winds. The larger the poles and beams are, the more capable the structure is of withstanding our harsh weather conditions. The specific type of canopy top or roof does not affect the frame's capacity to withstand these forces. Also, how the poles are connected to the surface can be weak link as well.
That is why we always say, "be prepared to shelter your vehicles"

Carports and Patio Covers of Oklahoma specializes in constructing permanent type of structures, providing excellent protection for your family and vehicles.
Whether it's a car, truck, boat, RV, motorcycle, trailer, or any farm or construction equipment, our carports serve as a safeguard. Occasionally, they may also function as storage. Each of our carports and patio covers is custom designed to shield your family and valuable assets from rain, hail, snow, ice, intense heat, and debris falling from trees. There are different types of Carports structures that are fabricated out of various different building materials. Everyone having their own unique building advantages. We sometime suggest using heavier gauged steel or 1/8-inch-thick extruded aluminum poles and beams to be able to span longer distances or lift any structure up higher up in the air and fly like a big UFO. Those who ignores the advice or the warnings are the ones who are at risk, and we normally see again down the road again as they might have to build it again. We try to keep that from happening upfront and in the first place.
If your vehicles are currently stored outside and is exposed to the weather elements, we suggest investigating the possibility of purchasing a custom-built "permanent" carport canopy structure to protect your valuable vehicle investments.
Prepare and safeguard your valuable vehicles with a new carport structure. Don't allow Mother Nature to harm or ruin your vehicles, machinery, or other investment assets. Vehicles represent a significant expense and are often our second-largest investment in life. As vehicles become increasingly expensive,
It is wise to prepare and protect your investments.
Your vehicle(s) or RVs is something that probably took you a long time to save up to purchase. In fact, you may still be paying for them and there would be nothing worse than having it damage due to just one of our hailstorms. We all want to keep our vehicle(s) in tip-top shape so resell them at the highest price possible.
Many clients express that they wish they had commissioned our build services earlier. Unfortunately, some have experienced significant damage to their vehicles before engaging us to build for them.
Carports can be a wise investment, often paying for themselves multiple times throughout their lifespan.
A single hailstorm can justify the cost of a carport, which continues to protect for many years thereafter.
This what happens if your car is damaged by a hailstorm:
1. The customer is responsible for the insurance deductibles.
2. When a vehicle’s title is marked as damaged, it significantly lowers the value of your investment.
3. When a vehicle’s value drops, it often ends up classified as wholesale vehicle instead of a frontline premium vehicle that could earn the most money. If your vehicles gets damaged, it’s more likely to be sold to a wholesale buyer and then resold at a frontline auto dealer lot. As a result, the owner of a damaged vehicle can take a big hit compared to owning an undamaged, higher-value car.
Protect your vehicle investment!

ROLLED Formed pan that has a textured finish in a while or a wheat (Ivory) color. NOTE: Not all rolled formed fabricated flat pans or W- pans are the very same. All are custom rolled with various different flat stock coil which is available in different thicknesses. We also offer a textured Rhino pan in white or wheat
Carports - will pay for themselves with just one hailstorm and keep on doing their job for numerous years to come after that. If your vehicle has to set outside unprotected, you're at risk.
The average life of a house roof in the local area is 6 yrs in this region. So, it doesn't matter if you purchase a 30–40-year roof the average life is about 6 yrs. because of hail and wind damage in our region. If we take that 6-year average roof damage replacement and apply it to a carport, then it should pay for itself several times over and over again during its lifespan. Depending on the value of the vehicle this along can pay for the cost of a carport.
($3,000 - $20,000)
If a carport was to save vehicle more than once, then there you go. If you have two vehicles and a carport structure was to save them from being damaged ever 6 yrs, then you're coming out way on top. We been building for 30 plus yrs. and the carports that we built back then are still doing their jobs today. Most people we build for say they should have built years before they did so.
Smart money says - If you're going to pay for a carport, then why not own it?
It just takes a lot of stress and worries away, and you will sleep better at night knowing your vehicles are protected when you own a carport! Most people who purchased say they should of purchased years ago.

Red Iron Steel comes in various shapes, including angles, C-channel and/or I-beams, available in multiple thicknesses and lengths. It is commonly used as a framing material, typically clad with sheet metal and bent-formed trim in several color options. The red oxide is a primer shop grade paint coating and should be painted in an outdoor application.
1. Strong - Most metal building is constructed using some form of steel. Steel is strong and able to open span longer spans then wood.
Steel is actually black in color, and the red steel is the very same that has a shop coating of red oxide primer coated steel. Also referred to as red iron, red steel etc. and so one.
The red steel is used in most metal building applications, and the steel building are quickly cover with metal sheet metal cladding materials that is often sheet metal and is mainly used in a indoor environment and is protected from the outdoor weather.
When red steel is used in an outdoor weather environment it should be painted with a final protected coating to prevent the steel metal building components from rusting.
Most of the time the red steel framing components are then finished out with some form of metal sheet metal cladding and custom bent formed trim option.

Strong/Durability: Galvanized steel boasts high durability, which is perfect for applications requiring longevity. Its zinc coating serves as a protective barrier, safeguarding the underlying metal from rust and degradation.
Corrosion Resistance: The zinc-iron alloy layer offers superior corrosion resistance. This allows galvanized steel to endure harsh environmental conditions, such as moisture, salt, and various chemicals.
Strength: Even post-galvanization, galvanized steel retains its robustness. It's frequently utilized in contemporary steel-framed buildings, balconies, verandas, staircases, and more.
Low Maintenance: Requiring little maintenance, galvanized steel helps to minimize long-term expenses. It continues to look good, and resists rust effectively.
Much like a galvanized fence that has a silver color coating on it to protect it from the outdoor environment. Galvanized coat metal can steel rust but normal over a must long period of time then a steel that has little to coating protection.
All types of steel fabricated products can have various different pole and beam option as well as different gladding options option that are available in different color options.

Same as red steel structures but its frame structure that has been painted. It is an extra added service of a painter with extra charges depending on the size of the structure costs will vary. The red steel framed structures is a premiered coating of a red oxide primmer. The painting is a final finished coating that is very simmerer to vehicles finish coatings Metal that has a premier and a finish painted coating just looks finished. Some might want to paint the frames themself and that is alright by us as opposed to hiring a professional painter.
We build it, then and you can add your own personal touches to make it your very own!

Powder coating is a highly durable finish for metal frames. Here are some benefits of using powder-coated steel frames or just having a third-party painting service just add a finish coating of paint most likely done after the structure has been built.
Rust Resistance: - Powder coated steel frames offer high rust resistance. The powder coating finish, unlike traditional paint, can endure up to 20 years without the need for reapplication.
Chip Resistance: Powder coating, which adheres electrostatically, does not chip or peel like paint over time, making it a robust choice for steel frames in the elements.
Enhanced Durability: Powder coating adds a protective layer against dents and scratches, bolstering the steel frame's structural integrity without increasing weight.

Most of the sheet metal trim options follow metal building trim options and can consist of various different rake and bent formed profiles that are available in 16 different color options.
Some people want one color option, and some might to mix the color of trim with a different color panel covering. The make like a two-tone color choices.

We offer various different trim options because some just don't want the structure to look like a carports or patio cover. They want more options. If you want to dress one up let us know. icture is our Santa-fe style trim with its exposed rafter tails that is aluminum.

It looks like it's a WOODEN carport, but it is a STEEL framed carport!
From a basic carport ora patio cover to custom designs, freestanding or attached designs. Whatever your vision may be, we can create the shade and protective cover. Plus, added options such as special-order columns and beautifully contoured beams let you make a statement that is truly unique. Some people might call this a hybrid type of carport because it is built using two different building materials. Metal framed with wood trim and poles.
Wood - Stick framing run deep within our roots and we are old framers from way back. All outdoor wooden product has to be protected so they won't be affected by moisture and decay faster as well as being protected from bugs such as termites.

Wood - Stick framing run deep within our roots and we are old framers from way back. All outdoor wooden product has to be protected so they won't be affected by moisture and decay faster as well as being protected from bugs such as termites.
When using wood within an outdoor environment you have to be commented to protecting and preserving the wood building products from the weather or the wood is going to turn a dull gray color and not look very good within a just a few seasons.
We call it weather wood rot.
When wood is used within an outdoor application it is always suggested that we use a premium wood that performs better within an outdoor application such as a Cedar or a Redwood. Those types of woods are considered to be a premium cost wood product and just cost more the standard white pine stick framing members that the framing members are normally going to be covered up with wall or roofing cladding materials. Using the premium woods does have a higher overall building cost. plus, the longer open spans require larger timbers which also cost more.
There are always additional services such as roofing and painting or staining services that have to consider when using any wood products. Wood does have a "limited lifespan, especially when used within an outdoor use application.
The facts are we always use a whole lot more sticks and larger timber while framing the same type of open span outdoor structure as we do use as a metal product. As much a 4x times more wood products are needed to safely cover the same open span as a metal product. Using wood there has to be at least 3-4 time more roof pitch when using the wood product over using metal products.
Within In an add-on type of structure applications that ties into the existing structure we must be sure that that the existing structure is designed or engineered to handle any additional structure and that may require to add to the structure. Additional professional architectural services may be needed. With that being said there is nothing that looks like and the smell like a nice cedar wood framed structure and some just prefer the rustic look of a nice wood framed structure.
The larger the canopy structure the larger and heavier the beams and poles must be as that is what is doing the heavy lifting of the whole structure. The frame is where all of the wind and snow load rating comes from. The canopy top has nothing to do with the structures engineering rating it's all in the poles and the beams.

This just showcases our ability to create and be flexible and versatile that cater to a wide range of preferences. What set us apart from many other builders is that build with numerous different building materials and most only deal with just one.
Any and all of the building materials have their own limits to how they should be safely used to cover the canopy open span area or between any structure poles. If exceeded the building materials limits the structure could fail while under stress which normally comes during a server weather event. In most cases the materials shouldn't be used at 100 percent of it engineering spec. 70% or less is the preferred rule of thumb! The stress of any structure can come from many forms but normally come from wind, snow. earthquake or shafting of the dirt soil.
Live loads refer to the total weight of the structure.
Snow loads refer to the amount of "snow and ice" weight per sq ft (PSF) that a building's roof is able to support.
Wind loads refer to the amount of force the winds put on any type of structure and in a canopy type of application we talk about up-drafts or down-drafts winds. In Oklahoma we experience high wind loads. When dealing with a larger clear open span structure without the use of any center poles you must use building materials that are engineered or designed for that purpose which it is intended. All building materials must be designed and engineered for the purpose of which it is intended. Larger longer and thicker beams must be able to handle the larger, longer open span openings between the poles.
Never scrimp on the columns / poles that is what holds the structure up. All post must attach to a concrete pads surface or set into a 2-ft deep concrete pear. You can never have all of the legs that are surface mounted or you're asking for trouble because of structural lateral sway. Concrete Core drilling a concrete slab might be an option for a more securing pole mounting applications.
We work with our clients to understand their unique needs and deliver solutions that exceed their expectations.
As framer like to say, it all starts with the frame of the structure...

Our customer, Ms. Shannon, shared this photo with us the morning after a smaller tornado struck the school on Norman St. in Moore, OK.
She expressed her gratitude for a well-built sturdy carport we constructed for them which survived the tornado and the extremely high winds that tore the roof off the house next door and shattered the windows. Take a look at the house right next door and within few feet of our carport! That house was a total loss, and it had to be demolished and rebuilt.
Our carport canopy withstood the extremely high winds that occurred right beside it. This attached roll-formed aluminum carport canopy was constructed to replace an older one that had been damaged about a year before this weather event took place. When we submitted our building plans and project drawings to the City of Moore for a carport build permit, the building inspector at the time requested that we upgrade the carport's cross beams from the standard 7-inch to a larger 10-inch cross beams. The engineering of this flat-pan carport structure was designed for 90 mph wind loads with the standard 7-inch aluminum beams. However, when obtaining the building permit, the building code inspector suggested we use the upgraded 10-inch extruded aluminum beams for enhanced strength just in case. We all agreed to construct the carport canopy with the larger beams despite the additional cost of the larger beams, and the building permits were issued for the project to proceed with installation.
Approximately a year later, a tornado struck that area, and the durability of our construction was evident in the posted picture. The carport we constructed featured the larger 10-inch high, 1/8-inch-thick extruded aluminum beams, which the City of Moore building inspector had recommended at the time of construction.
The use of heavier beams and ensuring that the poles are secured in the ground with a pear-type footing undoubtedly contributed to the structure's stability that day.
Here's something astonishing that I couldn't believe: this carport was completely undamaged from the Debra field of the house next door. I drove over to inspect it, and despite all the glass and roofing materials blown off the house, nothing in the air struck or damaged that carport. Tornadoes certainly do some strange things...
Building codes are a minimum building standard and different municipalities have different building standards. Any customer might want to build above any standard building requirements.
The house next door was a total loss and had to be taken down and re-built with a new one.
Building codes requirements are the minimum building requirements to meet which are currently 2015 IBC (International building codes) of 90 mph in OKC which are already outdated. When the updated newer codes are adopted for the 2018 IBC that will be raised to 115 mph wind loads
In Oklahoma, construction must account for the strong winds. The highest straight-line wind gust recorded this year was 115mph in May 2024 on the South OKC metro area.
The record for the highest wind gust ever recorded in Oklahoma is 151 mph in 2011.
We know how to build for Oklahoma extreme wind loads.

A Porte-cochere (French: different, lit. ‘coach gateway’) is a grand entranceway to a building or courtyard. It allows vehicles to enter from the street or provides porch-like drive under structure at a main or secondary entrance. Originally designed for horse-drawn carriages, today it accommodates motor vehicles.

We offer extruded .060 thick aluminum covers as well as more economical ,032 roll-formed covers for any application. Whether it be commercial parking areas, entrance doors, walkways between buildings, handicapped ramp covers, or break areas,

Carports and Patio Cover of Oklahoma has the right protective cover for your specific needs. With innovative custom design options with various different building materials and from 12ft - 24ft wide and as long as you need them to be built. We can build with a storage shed option as well.
Don't be fooled. Some builders out here that are ignoring product engineering standards. These so-called builders might construct a shoddy carport structure using subpar materials, like cheap poles disguised as "structural beams," leaving their customers in a risky and unsafe situation! Some so-called builders are willing to build a jacked-up carport structure and use inferior parts (cheap poles that are pasted off as "structural beams") and hang their customers out to dry in a precarious situation!
The poles and the beams are the single most important parts of any outdoor structures. The framework serves as the backbone of the structure, bearing the brunt of the loads. When considering the impact of snow, ice, wind, and live load requirements.
All construction materials must adhere to their specific standards and engineering guidelines, fulfilling their intended purpose without surpassing their design limitations is paramount to the longevity of any structure.
The ultimate test of a structure's resilience is its ability to withstand the accumulation of heavy snow and/or ice. Ultimately, the stability of the structure is upheld by the poles and its beams as that is the part of the structure that does all the heavy lifting.
A contractors must be knowledgeable about building codes and permit requirements and must not intentionally deviate from them and build just anything! ( See pic above which is building framed damaged during its construction by high winds in OKC )
