Spring, summer, and fall are storm seasons on the Southern Plains, bringing some truly unique weather conditions. Around here, they say you have to stay weather aware. Beyond our sizzling hot summers that can bake the clear coat and paint right off your car, we can get intense, severe, or downright wild thunderstorms that produce heavy rain, large hail, dangerously strong wind gusts, and even tornadoes. In fact, Oklahoma has more tornadoes per square mile than any other state and is known as part of “hail core alley.” When the winds sweep down the Southern Plains, Oklahoma’s weather is unlike anywhere else—hot, humid, and with gusts that feel like the big bad wolf trying to blow your house down. When the winds come swiping down the southern plains, Oklahoma's weather is not like any other place on earth! It gets hot and humid in this neck of the woods. Oklahoma’s wind events routinely exceed 60–80 mph, and in storms can spike past 100 mph, so structure matters more than size or price.

In 2026, we’ve already seen a record number of tornadoes for the mouth of March. On March 10th, a hailstorm swept through the OKC metro area, moving from the far Southwest parts of the City, then across downtown, and into the far east side of the city, causing damage from the hail along its path.
In June we had a Derecho which is a widespread long-lived and fast-moving straight-line windstorm that winds can exceed 58-130 mph. The aftermath of this derecho we seen a lot of this portable type of carports built with light wight tubing that got destroyed because they were not built for those destructive high winds.
When building any larger sized or taller the canopy structure, the more uplift from wind drafts it will experience. This can cause the structure to attempt to lift up into the air like a kite or to be torn apart. The design and engineering of the larger canopy frame must account for the unique weather conditions it might encounter, or the structure could be lost or damaged beyond repair. While many parts of the country may only require a design for 35-mph wind loads, our products must be capable of withstanding frequent wind loads of 75 to over 100 mph.
That’s why we often point out that what works in another region of the country might not be a good fit for use here in Oklahoma, given our extreme wind loads that local structures must be designed to handle it. We’ve seen cheap portable or temporary carports either get blown away or fall apart in our extremely high winds.

Red Iron Steel comes in various shapes, including angles, C-channel and/or I-beams, available in multiple thicknesses and lengths. It is commonly used as a framing material, typically clad with sheet metal and bent-formed trim in several color options. The red oxide is a primer shop grade paint coating and should be painted in an outdoor application.
1. Strong - Most metal building is constructed using some form of steel. Steel is strong and able to open span longer spans then wood.
Steel is actually black in color, and the red steel is the very same that has a shop coating of red oxide primer coated steel. Also referred to as red iron, red steel etc. and so one.
The red steel is used in most metal building applications, and the steel building are quickly cover with metal sheet metal cladding materials that is often sheet metal and is mainly used in an indoor environment and is protected from the outdoor weather.
When red steel is used in an outdoor weather environment it should be painted with a final protected coating to prevent the steel metal building components from rusting.
Most of the time the red steel framing components are then finished out with some form of metal sheet metal cladding and custom bent formed trim option.
We now have the new 3-D high-definition wood printed sheet metal panels that has a realistic wood grain color on them. So now you can have a metal carport that is made to look like it is wood and it all designed to last. It doesn't have the same print pattern for 24ft long. Same as red steel structures but its frame structure that has been painted. It is an extra added service of a painter with extra charges depending on the size of the structure costs will vary. The red steel framed structures is a premiered coating of a red oxide primmer. The painting is a final finished coating that is very simmerer to vehicles finish coatings Metal that has a premier and a finish painted coating just looks finished. Some might want to paint the frames themself and that is alright by us as opposed to hiring a professional painter.

Most of the sheet metal trim options follow metal building trim options and can consist of various different rake and bent formed profiles that are available in 16 different color options.
Some people want one color option, and some might to mix the color of trim with a different color panel covering. The make like a two-tone color choice. Now available in for (4) different wood grain color options

With the recent high wind events and the derecho—a widespread, long-lasting, fast-moving line of thunderstorms producing straight-line winds over 90 mph that can rip apart almost anything in their path—it’s been a wild and intense stretch of weather we recently had.
The poles and the beams are the single most important parts of any type of structures. The framework serves as the backbone of the structure, bearing the brunt of the loads. When considering the impact of snow, ice, wind, and live load requirements.
All construction materials must adhere to their specific standards and engineering guidelines, fulfilling their intended purpose without surpassing their design limitations is paramount to the longevity of any structure.
The ultimate test of a structure's resilience is its ability to withstand the accumulation of heavy winds or snow and/or ice. Ultimately, the stability of the structure is upheld by the poles and its beams as that is the part of the structure that does all the heavy lifting.
Choosing authentically designed and engineered structural beams, despite their higher cost compared to less expensive, lower-quality construction materials, offers enhanced strength and greater long-term structural integrity.
.It is crucial for withstanding the higher wind loads commonly experienced within our region of the United States that can see high winds events that might exceed 80-100 mph plus straight-line winds.
Unfortunately, some inexperienced builders prioritize offering the lowest price over explaining the benefits of a stronger, code-compliant canopy. Opting for thicker, stronger poles and beams is always a better choice.
What was acceptable to build 25 years ago might not meet today’s building standards. Each year, the International Building Code (IBC) releases updated and more rigorous building requirements. Every few years, our local municipalities vote to adopt these updated codes, often without any public notice.
Some cities are still following outdated 2019 building codes, which set minimum wind loads at 95 mph. The newer codes raise that to 115 mph, but many places haven’t adopted the updated IBC guidelines yet. On the evening of July 4th, straight-line winds in the area topped 93 mph. These codes are minimum standards, not maximums, and experienced builders often aim for at least 75 percent above the minimum. Push things to their limit, and you might get burned.

In Shawnee, OK The updated carport building code standards require structures to withstand 115 mph wind loads and 20 pounds per square inch live loads. Builders must now provide an engineering stamp from the manufactures that has been approved and certified by Oklahoma building engineer verifying that the carport meets these code requirements. No longer just any carport can be built. It must be certified making this really complicated process and taking this to a whole new level now.
The way poles are connected to the surface can also be a weak point. Many cities now prohibit anchoring or pinning structures to any existing concrete surface. In some cases, core drilling or cutting into the existing concrete may be suggested or required, rather than simply surface mounting as was common in the past.
In Warr Acres, all carport poles now have to be set in an approved concrete pier at least 3 feet deep into the ground. For poles on a concrete driveway, the surface must be cut or bored, with the pole installed in a 4-foot-wide concrete pier. This type of pier was once only required for commercial or asphalt type of driveway projects, but it’s now mandatory for all residential installations in Warr Acres. OK

It allows vehicles to enter from the street or provides porch-like drive under structure at a main or secondary entrance. Originally designed for horse-drawn carriages, today it accommodates motor vehicles.

Our customer, Ms. Shannon, shared this photo with us the morning after a smaller tornado struck the school on Norman St. in Moore, OK.
She expressed her gratitude for a well-built sturdy carport we constructed for them which survived the tornado and the extremely high winds that tore the roof off the house next door and shattered the windows. Take a look at the house right next door and within few feet of our carport! That house was a total loss, and it had to be demolished and rebuilt.
Our carport canopy withstood the extremely high winds that occurred right beside it. This attached roll-formed aluminum carport canopy was constructed to replace an older one that had been damaged about a year before this weather event took place. When we submitted our building plans and project drawings to the City of Moore for a carport build permit, the building inspector at the time requested that we upgrade the carport's cross beams from the standard 7-inch to a larger 10-inch cross beams. The engineering of this flat-pan carport structure was designed for 90 mph wind loads with the standard 7-inch aluminum beams. However, when obtaining the building permit, the building code inspector suggested we use the upgraded 10-inch extruded aluminum beams for enhanced strength just in case. We all agreed to construct the carport canopy with the larger beams despite the additional cost of the larger beams, and the building permits were issued for the project to proceed with installation.
Approximately a year later, a tornado struck that area, and the durability of our construction was evident in the posted picture. The carport we constructed featured the larger 10-inch high, 1/8-inch-thick extruded aluminum beams, which the City of Moore building inspector had recommended at the time of construction.
The use of heavier beams and ensuring that the poles are secured in the ground with a pear-type footing undoubtedly contributed to the structure's stability that day.
Here's something astonishing that I couldn't believe: this carport was completely undamaged from the Debra field of the house next door. I drove over to inspect it, and despite all the glass and roofing materials blown off the house, nothing in the air struck or damaged that carport. Tornadoes certainly do some strange things...
Building codes are a minimum building standard and different municipalities have different building standards. Any customer might want to build above any standard building requirements.
The house next door was a total loss and had to be taken down and re-built with a new one.
Building codes requirements are the minimum building requirements to meet which are currently 2015 IBC (International building codes) of 90 mph in OKC which are already outdated. When the updated newer codes are adopted for the 2018 IBC that will be raised to 115 mph wind loads
In Oklahoma, construction must account for the strong winds. The highest straight-line wind gust recorded this year was 115mph in May 2024 on the South OKC metro area.
The record for the highest wind gust ever recorded in Oklahoma is 151 mph in 2011.

If we take that 6-year average roof damage replacement and apply it to a carport, then it should pay for itself several times over and over again during its lifespan. Depending on the value of the vehicle this along can pay for the cost of a carport.
