RV carports typically come in two main styles: prefabricated RV carports and custom RV carports. Assembling an RV carport or a larger canopy is a significant project that requires careful planning to protect your investment while fulfilling your practical needs. It’s essential to design your structure with local weather conditions in mind.

Awnings are a great way to enhance your outdoor space, particularly when combined with custom RV carports or prefabricated RV carports. They boost energy efficiency and protect your area from UV damage while offering sun control. Additionally, they safeguard windows and doors from the harsh effects of the sun. Moreover, awnings can serve as sidewalk canopies and provide protection against hail damage for windows, which is particularly important for those using RV carports.

Investing in a custom RV carport is an excellent way to safeguard your rig from the elements, including sun damage, hail, snow, ice, dust, and pine sap. Since RVs vary widely in shapes and sizes, custom RV carports can be tailored to fit any specific requirements, with various dimensions available to accommodate oversized vehicles or unique storage needs. Constructing these structures involves more planning than a standard two-car driveway carport. Because RV carports are typically taller, they are more susceptible to racking or lateral sway, and wind uplift. Most people prefer to have at least 2-3 feet of extra space around their RV, including in the height of the structure. Feel free to share your project requirements with us. Our designs for prefabricated RV carports are generally custom-built on-site using durable, thick-walled structural metal or truss wood components.
Additionally, many local municipalities may require “engineered and/or stamped plans” signed by a state-approved building engineer for review by the building inspector as part of the permit approval process. This is a prerequisite for obtaining a building permit.
If you plan to include electrical connections in your RV carports, a separate permit is typically necessary and usually acquired through a licensed electrical contractor, which incurs additional professional service charges.
Please note that any build proposal does not include dirt work, concrete work, or electrical work, as these are separate trade disciplines and require distinct bid proposals.

Fifth Wheels & Travel Trailers: These non-motorized trailers can vary significantly in size, usually averaging between 30 to 50 feet long. Many come with slide-outs, which increase their overall width.
Average Size: 16 to 20 feet wide × 40 to 50 feet long
Required Side Leg Height: 13 to 15 feet
To determine the ideal structure for your RV, consider exploring our prefabricated RV carports as well.
When you’re ready to plan, please let me know:
- What is the exact length and height of your RV?
- Do you have any slide-outs?
- Are you interested in an open-sided carport or a fully enclosed metal garage?
I’m here to help you decide on the best building footprint for your custom RV carport!

Average RV carport sizes significantly depend on the class of your RV. As a general guideline, when considering custom RV carports or prefabricated RV carports, it's advisable to add 2-3 feet of clearance height and at least 3 to 6 feet of extra length to your RV's total dimensions. This ensures easy maneuvering and comfortable door operation.
Class A Motorhomes are the largest vehicles on the road, typically ranging from 30 to 45 feet long and 12 to 13.5 feet high.
Average Size: 16 to 20 feet wide × 45 feet long
Required Side Leg Height: 14 to 16 feet
Class C Motorhomes are slightly smaller, featuring an over-cab sleeping section, and usually measure between 20 to 33 feet long and up to 12 feet high.
Average Size: 12 to 16 feet wide × 35 to 40 feet long
Required Side Leg Height: 12 to 14 feet
Class B Motorhomes, also known as camper vans, are the most compact units, often converted from cargo vans. They typically measure 17 to 22 feet long and 9 to 10 feet high.
Average Size: 10 to 12 feet wide × 20 to 26 feet long
Required Side Leg Height: 10 feet minimum.

At A Better Construction Company, DBA Carports and Patio Covers of OK, we believe quality construction should be accessible to everyone. With over 30 years in the industry, our skilled team is dedicated to delivering exceptional results at affordable prices for both commercial and residential projects.
I recently came across a well-built, attractive prefabricated RV carport kit and inquired about the price, only to be surprised by how much they were asking just for the structure—about $25 to $30 per square foot, not including installation or shipping. Each project needs to stand on its own, and before we can submit a bid proposal, we have to figure out our own costs, which often means doing some upfront legwork. Most of the time, we receive project bid proposals from our building material supplier, and those costs have all gone up.

How to choose high-quality custom RV carports built from structural heavy-walled steel structures when faced with a plethora of lightweight square tubing options. You can count on us.
Most RV carports you'll find online or at big box stores are typically constructed from much lighter-gauge galvanized steel tubing. This choice is largely due to its ease of handling, reduced weight, and lower shipping costs for providers. These units often arrive in boxes or large crates that require kit builders to assemble, offering little in terms of fabrication—essentially a one size fits all approach.
There are a multitude of models available in various designs and sizes. However, we do not offer or sell prefabricated RV carports made from galvanized tubing due to local weather conditions and higher wind load requirements. More often than not, these structures fail to meet local building code standards, especially if you reside in an area with stricter regulations and outdated building codes.
It's important to note that not all square tubing products on the market are poorly constructed; some higher-quality models do exist. These select custom RV carports can meet current building codes, but they tend to be on the higher end of the square tubing manufacturing spectrum, often requiring a longer wait for installation. Many are marketed as easy-to-install DIY kits, yet they still must be supported by an approved concrete pier.

Why does the internet claim it’s cheaper to buy prefabricated RV carports instead of having custom RV carports built? Just look around—there are so many low-quality, cheap models flooding the market that aren’t really designed to serve as proper carports. They’re more suited for covering hay to keep it dry and prevent mold than for protecting an expensive vehicle. Some are so poorly made, it’s honestly just ridiculous.
That is why many larger municipalities have adopted stronger building code requirements. They have seen the destruction and damage that these flimsy structures can cause during a storm or a high wind event.
Most local municipalities require the construction of more permanent structures rather than opting for some type of portable building solution when it comes to RV carports.
It’s important to note that all different municipalities have their own unique building requirements. The smaller towns typically have fewer regulations compared to larger cities that might have more stringent guidelines.
In Oklahoma, it’s crucial to recognize our unique weather and extremely high wind loads. Mother Nature can get pretty wicked at times, and I often say, “What works elsewhere in the country can easily fail here due to severe storms and intense high winds.” Lightweight frames often found in prefabricated RV carports were not designed for high winds, no matter what the claims might be. If you’re building anything elevated or a larger structure, you have to account for strong updrafts—one local city building inspector put it best: “It’s like putting a kite in the air, with straight-line winds over 72 mph that can snap an electric pole in half, tear off roofs, and knock down walls.” You have to build for it. How a structure is designed, engineered, and built makes all the difference when it’s under stress and determines if it will last long-term. Remember, building codes are just the minimum standard, and anyone can choose to build to higher standards. Taller structures, like custom RV carports, simply need heavier, stronger components—plain and simple.
It is important that all carports must be attached into approved concrete piers. Some local municipalities no longer allow any type of canopy structure to be surface-mounted to existing concrete surfaces, so depending on the size of the structure, the installation of a carport or patio cover might require

Most of the time, we are boring a concrete pier hole into the ground to place the poles of a custom RV carport structure to meet local code requirements. Occasionally, the poles can be surface mounted using various different pole brackets. However, it is never recommended to have all the poles of any RV carport structure surface mounted, as this can lead to significantly more lateral swaying during higher winds. Any appreciable lateral or sideward movement of the top of a vertical member relative to its bottom is referred to as side sway, sway, or lateral drift. It's wise to use a bigger and stronger pole to minimize any swaying. Ideally, the poles should be placed in a concrete pier whenever possible. In some cases, it may be necessary to core drill the concrete surface, and if you're dealing with asphalt or other surfaces, installing a larger concrete landing pier is advisable. While concrete coring can be as simple as renting a machine and a bit for residential jobs, commercial projects benefit from enlisting experienced professionals with specialized boring equipment, especially when constructing prefabricated RV carports.
